The following guide provides more general information on trampoline weight limits based on various sizes and shapes. In many cases some brands and models are routinely stronger or weaker than what is displayed in the table above. Additionally the material used to make the trampoline can make a difference. Let’s explore these factors.

Why Trampoline Weight Limits Are Important

Understanding the weight that your trampoline can hold is critically important for the safety of the user and for the lifespan of the trampoline.  While many trampolines are designed specifically for children there are brands and styles made that can accommodate the load of a full-grown adult, even a large individual.

Weight limits are set on a trampoline for safety purposes, but also to reflect the appropriate size person for maximum fun.  The springs on a trampoline when rated for a heavy weight will not function as well for a very a lightweight jumper like a young child or toddler.  They do not have enough weight and will not be able to get as much momentum down which them springs them back up.  The downward force generates the upward force to send you into the air.

The exact opposite is true for heavier person as they may be able to generate significant downward force and be sent flying high on a lightly rated trampoline they also risk either bottoming out and hitting the ground or worse ripping the jump mat or breaking a coil.

Damage can occur to the trampoline when too much weight is placed onto the jump pad.  The damage that can be caused includes puncturing a hole in the pad, stretching out or breaking the coils, and bending or even collapsing the frame.

What Style of Trampoline is Stronger?

As outlined in the table above round trampolines are not able to hold as much weight generally as square trampolines.  This does vary by manufacturer as there are a couple of unique brands namely the Springfree and Skywalker that do make models that carry more weight than the typical trampoline.

Brand Matters Concerning Weight Capacity

As in most things going with a name brand product versus a cheaper knock off will cost more but is likely to also provide assurances in quality and safety.  A trampoline is no different and so consider one of the following brands when looking for the right trampoline for your backyard.

  • JumpSport
  • AllyOop Double Bounce
  • Springfree
  • Skywalker

How Much Weight Can a Springfree Trampoline Hold?

Springfree is a unique style of trampoline and does not utilize the traditional coils.  It is revered as one of the best brands on the market and uses a special flexible composite rod installed at a 45-degree angle.  It also comes in various sizes with the largest version being capable of holding a full-grown large adult at 330 lbs.

What Other Factors Does The Weight Capacity of a Trampoline Depend On?

Factor 1: Shape

The first factor that you should think about is the shape of the trampoline. Each shape provides you with entirely different features and so choosing the shape wisely is really important. Different shapes are better for multiple bouncers at the same time while others are better for heavier loads.

Here are a few articles the go deep into the differences between the most common shapes available:

Factor 2: Material Used

The materials that are used in constructing the frame and jumping mat are also really important factors. High quality materials usually mean you can put more weight on your trampoline without extra risk. This is exactly why experts recommend not compromising on the quality just because of the price unless there’s no other choice.

Pay close attention to the springs and jumping mat because the frame will usually be fairly strong even in the entry level trampolines. On the low end however the jumping mat and springs can be made fairly cheaply really bringing the overall strength, safety, and longevity of the trampoline into question.

Factor 3: Sturdiness

A trampoline that’s been built for the purpose of holding more weight will be sturdier and less likely to be damaged by heavier jumpers. If you go for one of the sturdier models (usually more expensive) your trampoline will be able to safely handle multiple jumpers or over-weight jumpers.

Now, this does not apply to every model, and you still have to do your research. Keep in mind that no single factor can alone be a determinant for anything. So, you need to consider all of these and do your research before you actually go out and buy a trampoline. Is There a Height Limit For Trampolines?

Unlike weight limits trampolines do not have height limits.

It is wise to consider that manufacturers often build their trampolines with the understanding the person jumping may be getting as high as 16 feet in the air.  Obviously, a taller person will get higher up in the air than a shorter person.  This is one of the biggest reasons that trampolines are recommended for outdoor use as most homes are not designed with tall enough ceilings to enjoy the trampoline.

Most states that regulate indoor jumping facilities require that the ceilings are a minimum of 26 feet in order to ensure all jumpers are safe from hitting the light fixtures or the ceiling itself.

Be Careful of Parent / Child Trampolines

There is a lot of creative marketing online as every company is seeking to give to their product’s competitive advantages over the rest of the trampolines.  Some companies actively market the products as a fun activity that can be used with a child and adult at the same time.

While this is certainly the case of larger, oval shaped trampolines you must be cognizant of the weight restrictions as there are many 8 – 12 foot round trampolines that are marketed like this although they have a rated weight limit of 150 lbs or less.  There certainly will be adults that can fit with their child in this weight range, but it is not likely going to be for the most people.

If you want to have a trampoline that will work well as a parent / child trampoline or a trampoline that multiple kids can enjoy at the same time make sure and select a brand, style, and size that will easily meet the weight limits you plan to place on the trampoline.

If you are sure that the whole family will be out on the trampoline at the same time look at getting a specifically designed trampoline for adults.  There are models that are built with extra support and special materials for the jump pad that can be rated between 400 to 750 pounds.  These very large weight capacity trampolines can hold multiple adults, however they do cost more than the average trampoline.

Maintain Your Trampoline by Staying Under Weight Limit

If your trampoline has a failure and the frame bends or breaks, the jump mat tears or punctures or the spring coils get all stretched out you may be able to get a replacement through the company warranty.

It is important to understand that most companies will completely void your warranty if they know or can prove by the type of damage that occurred that it was due to placing a load greater than the maximum weight limit.
